Full Yen Econ Tournament Report (17/03/12)

Finally entered a tourney since last month. This time, got top 4 with Edward and Cheng Wee. Decided to play a Final Countdown instead of Empty Jar because its a lot less combo oriented and I thought it would be funny to see who can do what. Apparently, I've been proven wrong.

Match 1: W-W
Hakim (FC) vs Pei Ming (Infernity)

Round 1:

He start, Dark Grepher, drop and mill, etc. I draw, Final Countdown, thin deck, then I wait. At one point, had one Purgatory Dragon + Barrier Behind. My turn, I activate A Day of Peace, he let it pass, but then he eventually died because he occupied all his zones. Also, he had no Xyz monsters in his extra deck, so pretty jacked from there.

Round 2:
Same as before. He didn't side. I think I just played without siding since he was going to play like a boss.

Match 2: W-L-W
Hakim vs some X-Saber dude who's name I forgot

Round 1:
Struggled like siao. He Gottoms, I almost died. Screw Gottoms.

Round 2: He Gottoms again, I run out of cards to protect myself.

Round 3: He set a bunch of monsters and cards, then he flip summon his monsters but when he attempted to synchro a level 6 monster, I Skill Drain his ass and cock block him for most of the game. But near the end of the game, he bombed my field and hand but it was turn 19 and I had A Day of Peace the last turn.

Match 3: L-W-L
Hakim vs Chewy (Inzectors)

Why bother writing? Doesn't matter who wins because top 4 by then.

Match 4: L-L
Hakim vs Xhi (Six Samurai)

Round 1: Wa lao, I draw-search-draw-search NEVER GET THE DAMN COUNTDOWN. In the end, he summon out the Naturia Beast and I just switch to stalling tactics but still died.

Round 2: Apparently, he let my Card Car D pass a lot but then his turn he pull out Naturia Beast. Next turn, he pull out a few more monsters, like Grandmaster, Enishi, Kizan. My turn, I decided to be stupid and ask him, "Which are the most threatening monsters" to which he pointed to Beast and Enishi. Then, I tributed the Beast and Enishi for Lava Golem, then Final Countdown.

At one point in the game, as some girl with a dog came to our table and kept staying there. I had no idea who she was at first, but then I asked Xhi to hold on a while till she and the dog go away. But WTF, the table consisting of Xhi, me, Chewy and Edward just poker face down there. Then, she talked to Edward and then it seemed obvious she was his sister. Cheng Wee tried to move his leg away from the dog but then got barked him. You fookin' kidding me?

Seriously annoying. I mean, honestly speaking, what Edward's sister did is the same as me eating beef RIGHT IN FRONT of a Buddhist or a Hindu guy. Its SO offensive. Maybe its my fault for not saying I'm uncomfortable, but is Edward and his sister so air-headed that they don't know they should keep the dog away from muslims? C'mon lah, tolong and give us a break.

Anyway, back to the duel. At one point, we were running out of time. Then, Final Countdown left 5 turns but then the judge, Ze Xuan, give only 4 turns. Guess what, turn 19, I can stall, he default that Xhi wins. I try argue a bit lah, but then I can't be bothered. Better to control my anger for another day. But can we have a change of judge for once? Please?

So yes, in the midst of anger, a boy who I call Frog boy came to tell us something. Because I can, I shall illustrate it in the form of a rage comic.

And that's what happened, asides all the table flipping.

So Xhi decided to take first prize of Mist Wurm and we split 6 packs amongst ourselves. Edward got nothing, I got Annid and Chewy got Galaxy Photon Eyes. He swap the two Xyz monsters but I don't mind because what's mine is his.

That's all folks!

Full Yen Econ Tournament Report (25/02/12)

Today's tourney as seen by me. Learned quite a lot from today's experience.

Pre-tourney: Found out Sebastian was my first opponent. Divine Intervention isn't it? Considering I've entered the YT tourney 4 times and 3 times I've matched up against him. Rofl.

Judges: Jiyeon, Eustace

Match 1: Empty Jar (Hakim) vs E-Heroes (Sebastian)
Win-Lose-Win

Game 1: I think I set a Deep Diver first and ended. His turn I think he summoned Stratos or Alius or something and rammed my Deep Diver. He checks the effect because its new to him and I show him I top deck Morphing Jar, which at the point he realizes I'm playing an Empty Jar deck. Drew, set Morphing Jar, Taiyou- got countered by Effect Veiler but then chained Book of Eclipse and proceeded to victory.

Game 2: Bad hand. Couldn't do much. Sebastian beat me down and controlled with Shock Ruler.

Game 3: Fun stuff. He summoned Honest first and hit me. Then I set like 2 cards and ended. His turn, he summoned Stratos, search Alius, then he had Stratos, Alius and Honest on the field. I was around half my lifepoints at that point so when he attacked with Stratos, I used Super Poly on his Alius and Stratos to summon E-HERO The Shining, like a boss. He got mind blown. Then, he used Compulsory Evac to bounce it and whack with Honest. So much win. Drew and proceeded to victory.

After the match, I began feeling like I was burning up. Don't think it was the weather, maybe just nervousness. But even now I feel like its still in on me.

Match 2: Empty Jar (Me) vs Some E-Hero deck
Win-Win

Game 1: IIRC, he had one Stratos and 2 or 3 set cards. When I flipped up Morphing Jar, he used Super Poly to summon E-Hero Gaia. But I just used Feather of the Phoenix to top deck it and win the next turn.

The guy had no side deck.

Game 2: Pretty much won.

My body continues overheating. Was I cursed? Couldn't stand it. Needed water.

Match 3: Empty Jar (Me) vs Lightsworn (Yoong Kang)
Win-Win

Game 1: Kinda won easily because of the right hand.

Game 2: I was doing the stun and all but then I got countered by an Effect Veiler and I had no counter or Book of Eclipse/Moon. Surprisingly. I still continued the stun anyway and won.

Becoming very hot and shaky. Difficult to focus and play.

Match 4: Empty Jar (Me) vs Laval (Poh Seng)
Win-Lose-Win

Played very slowly because of my current condition.

Game 1: He used Sweltering Heat Trasmission Wave (which is pretty much double foolish burial) to mill like 5 cards instantly. He ended his turn with Card Car D. Mind Blown. I kept stalling for time until he had like only half his deck left. Then I proceeded to winning. Along the way, he asked me the effects of my cards and I was rather surprised he didn't know.

Game 2: Bad hand. I think my Morphing Jar was around the bottom of my deck and I couldn't get searchers. I realized that I should use Prohibition to stop D.D. Crow from removing my cards. Kept stalling for time but got owned by Ancient Flamvell Deity, Stardust and Black Rose Dragon.

Game 3: Wow. I really managed to pull through here. I don't really recall entirely but It took me a couple of turns and a few beatings but I managed to OTK him.

Match 5: Empty Jar (me) vs Inzector (Wesley)
Lose-Lose

Game 1: Deep Diver got bombed but in this game, I stalled LIKE A BOSS. I think I activated One Day of Peace like 5 or 6 times? Till Wesley had like one card left in his deck. You know, he kept bombing all this cards and even used Torrential Tribute and Heavy Storm on himself. That's kind of an accomplishment. However, he eventually set up a new field and owned me because I dropped Swift Scarecrow the turn before.

Game 2: Lost. Bad. I kept stalling for time but I realized I could win. So yeah, he has like 5 cards left in his deck, I set and taiyou a needleworm- Effect veiler- book of eclipse- fiendish chain- book of eclipse- effect veiler. Shit. Lost from there, but I could have won from the Book of Eclipse by themselves because Wesley would draw himself to death. I think I'll let this one slide because I wasn't in good health at this point.

Overall I'm OK with this because Wesley used to play Empty Jar back when Book of Moon was at 3, so guess he has good experience with it and how to counter. And he's a nice guy, so its cool.

Overall, a very good experience in the tournament. Apparently, everyone who has Effect Veiler mains it and everyone sides in D.D. Crow. I think I may have misplayed by not using Prohibition on D.D. Crow as well. I also may consider maining Prohibition because of Effect Veiler.

Another thing I learned is that in the US, Empty Jar decks run Tour Guide of the Underworld because it is a lot more effective than Deep Diver. I should seriously put it in if possible because of today's Inzectors. But really, this deck is like $50-75 and probably one of the most budget decks in Yugioh, asides the foils-only. So do I really wanna pay $500 just for this? Obviously not. Though it'll be cool if I ever won the next tourney.

Also, a lot of people keep activating Solemn Warning and Torrential Tribute in response to Morphing Jar but I keep telling them they can't because it is NOT a flip summon but just a flip or battle position change. I also had to convince Sebastian and Jiyeon that when I had 4 set cards and then Book of Taiyou, I can chain Book of Eclipse AFTER because once the effect resolves, I have an open slot to chain. Its quite troubling because I feel like no one trusts or they don't agree with what I know. I mean, I've played this deck for a while so I try to know everything about my deck. So I hope people in the future understand this.

End of Tournament Report.

Ps: This chant should be valid till Mind Control is banned. (Just banned it, Mind Control troll people only)

Full Yen Ranking Tournament Report (04/02/12)

We were fucked before the tourney.

So yeah, just to troll people, I decided to play Gishkis because it takes real balls to enter a tourney using a ritual deck. But guess what, 2 key cards I need badly, Gishki Shadow and Gustaph Max were missing. So how? OK, just use Sangan and buy one Gustaph Max.

Enter Match 1, Round 1:
Ghakim's Gishki vs Benjamin's Gladiator Beasts - Win/Win

- I begin first, doing a lot of stun because I have Abyss, Vision and Salvage. End product IIRC, one Abyss, one Zeal Gigas.
- Benjamin begins, Summon Murmillo, activate Kaiser colesseum, set 3, end.
- Draw, Battle Phase (cuz I scared of War Chariot), suicide Abyss with Murmillo, attack with Zeal Gigas - Dimension Prison. Emo. Main Phase 2, Summon Beast, SP Abyss, search for Shadow I think. Set Spiritual Water Art Aoi. End.
- Benjamin draws, I activate Water Art ASAP, only discard My Body as a Shield. Emo. End.
- Draw, Activate Aquamirror- Dark Bribe, Activate Aquamirror- Dark Bribe. So sad. Nevermind, drop Shadow, search Aquamirror, activate with success! Summon Zeal Gigas, pay 1K lifepoints, drew an Abyss, shuffle his set card, win!

Enter Round 2:
For my side, I decide to put in 2 Royal Decree, 1 Gozen Match. Maybe 3 was better afterall.

- Don't really remember what happened but I was getting owned quite badly because of his heavy backrow and my Royal Decree getting bombarded.
- My Tragodiae dies, he summon Heraklinos, GG.
- Draw, I got a Monster Reborn, Levianima, Zeal Gigas. How to play? OK, Monster Reborn, target Tragodiae. He ask how many cards in my hand. He pass. WOW! OK, activate Tragodiae effect, drop Levianima and target Heraklinos. WOW! Pass again? Well yeah I was thinking that after most of my monsters effect passed. OK, whack you with Heraklinos, he eats 3K. Set Gozen Match, end.
- Fast forward, he summon out one Darius. Attack my Tragodiae. Obviously I won't let him battle because I don't want to die to a stupid Murmillo. Activate Gozen Match and send Tragodiae to grave. Main Phase 2, he activate one Spell card, forgot what, I drop Zeal Gigas like a boss and negate. He GG, end.
- Whack his Darius, he eat. Then he wish to scoop to which I accept because I know how it feels to die to a losing battle.

Enter Match 2, Round 1: Lose/Lose
Ghakim's Gishki vs Eustace's Six Samurai w/e

- He start first, only know how to summon Shien. I scrub.

Enter Round 2:
Threw in Royal Decree and Gozen Match.

- My hand really damn suck. What the fuck, Gishki so much search power yet can get damn suey hand! I summon Zeal Gigas, end.
- He Summon Shien, set 3, end.
- Draw, activate Zeal Gigas effect- Fiendish Chain. WTF. OK, Summon Abyss- Fiendish Chain. SERIOUSLY, WTF. I try to do some shit like Solemn Judgment, oh Magatama. FUCKING SHIT.
- Fast forward, I running out of cards, he summon Grandmaster, whack with him and Shien, I summon Tragodiae to cock block. OK, Main Phase 2, he summon Volcasaurus, bomb Tragodiae, 'game'.

SO HERE'S WHERE'S THE DRAMA.

1. Volcasaurus cannot inflict damage to a monster with ? ATK.
2. I had a Monster Reborn and one Zeal Gigas. So I still have a fighting chance.

These things were only realized after the tourney. But can I be blamed for if I don't know about card rulings like about Volcasaurus? Uh, no? Its not everyday I get burned by a Volcasaurus inside a SIX SAM DECK.

C'mon lah, if it takes a clone of Infernity Doom Dragon to win you a game against a ritual deck, something is severely wrong. I sometimes think that letting a ritual deck hit somewhere around the finals is more interesting than seeing Yet Another Everyday Deck top the tournament. WDF is Yugioh if a nobody can't become somebody?

See you in the next tournament.

- Ghakim

P.S. Remain pure against those who manipulate others, Great Obelisk! Punish the weak and feeble, Great Slifer! Give us strength in our time of need, Winged Dragon of Ra! And most importantly, ban Mind Control, Almighty Horakthy! Thank you!

Cyclones vs Dustshoots

Hey, its Ghakim, here's my first blog post for the group, trust me, I won't post dumb things *Cough* like someone.

So today, we will discuss Yugioh's two most prominent cards. One gets rid of Spells and Traps (S/T) and one gets rid of monsters, or rather, just returns them. Both are very similar in terms of card bonuses individually. Though what if one was chained to the other?

Let's talk about Cyclone, or as its so annoyingly called, Mystical Space Typhoon (Gawd damn I hate its English name). Everyone seems to activate this at the start of their Main Phase 1. Nothing wrong with that, as that's the thing with the most priority you should do when you start your turn but personally, I think the best time to activate Cyclone is at your Draw Phase because some cards can only be activated during your Standby Phase. So if its not chained to, you'll luckily hit a Mirror Force, Bottomless, Solemn Judgment or Thunder of Ruler (WDF?), resulting in a +0 or 1-for-1, which is good. Though what if you opponent chains to it and makes you lose card advantage? In this case, Trap Dustshoot. If you're really unlucky, he would have set that card to chain it to your first card's activation, resulting in a -1 for you, which totally blows (Sup Ameen?). Now that's the situation if Trap Dustshoot is his only set card.

This time, assume your opponent has 2 set S/Ts and one set monster. So, you draw a card and he activates Dustshoot ASAP. Now, your opponent has 1 set S/T and one monster. Wouldn't it seem like a good idea to activate that Cyclone since your opponent will gain a lot of knowledge to your strategy? OK, so let's chain the Cyclone and blow the set card. BOOM, you hit either an Icarus Attack or a Torrential Tribute. You just foiled your opponent's plan for your turn. Now that's nothing, try to fool a Negator monster.

OK, so this time your opponent has 2 set S/Ts, and that damn Legendary Six Samurai - Shi En. You draw, Dustshoot opens, would you chain Cyclone? Just do it, because at this time, you force your opponent to think critically on whether or not he wants to save his other set card. If he negates it, you may have a chance to kill off Shi En. If not, then you will have successfully destroyed his set card and play mind games with him as you wouldn't obviously activate your other spell and traps.

So that's some of the ideas to optimize the use of Cyclone in your opening hand. Now what about Trap Dustshoot? When should we open it? Let's say you open Dustshoot ASAP upon your opponent's turn. The benefits of this; 1-for-1 removal, full information on your opponent's cards, best possibility of strategy disruption. OK, what if you activate it after your opponent activates his first card? Either 1-for-1 removal or 2-for-1 removal, partial information on your opponent's cards but a lower possibility of strategy disruption, if he places too many cards on the field. So which one is better? Depends on the deck it is used against. Against monster-light decks like E-HEROs, it either hits very critically or it misses entirely (All Spell/Trap hand, you see). Against monster-heavy decks like Lightsworns, T.G. A, and Junk Doppel, it hardly hurts them because of the high number of monsters they run.

So yeah, that's my first blog post about Yugioh here. I hoped y'all enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing it. If you have any comments or thoughts, don't be afraid of posting it below.
